It appears many people around the world not only loathe certain monuments but are doing everything in their power to raze these structures that were created to commemorate persons or events considered important to society.

To guard against repeating historical injustice, there are calls in Nairobi, Kenya, for colonial monuments to be preserved while the British Government has built a commemorative monument to the MAU MAU uprising that led to the declaration of Emergency in the then British Kenya Colony in 1952.

But just what is the importance of monuments in society?
1). Rather than heal our wounds, monuments may seem to aggravate our injury by reminding us of a painful past
2). Destroying monuments would only falsify and not change history
3). Settling scores with our predecessors by destroying the monuments they created or that are dedicated to them does not alter the part of history we want so much forgotten
4). The part of history we dislike remains etched somewhere in our memory
5). Not learning from the past poses the greater risk of repeating a historical mistake or injustice which could be more damaging for future generations

6). Monuments carry scientific and historical importance as they provide researchers a glimpse into the past
7). Monuments remind us of who we are, where we came from and where we are going
8). Monuments preserve our history for future generations.
9). Monuments teach us about what happened before we were born
10). Monuments promote respect for the people who lived in different times, societies and cultures.
