African, Asian and Latin American Film Festival Invites Entries

African Short (fiction and documentary) Film competition is reserved for African directorsThe annual African, Asian and Latin American Film Festival invites entries for its 27th edition scheduled for March 20-26, 2017 in Milan.

The festival, that began in 1991 as the Festival of African Cinema and took on Asian and Latin American films in 2004, says the deadline for receiving submissions in December 18, 2016.

The organisers say they give special attention to young filmmakers, new trends and new audiovisual languages from the three continents in selecting the films.

“The presence at the Festival of directors from the three continents represents an opportunity for professional exchange with Italian and European operators of the sector as well as the opportunity to stimulate North-South and South-South co-productions,” a statement from the festival says.”Italian cinema is also present at the Festival, in the EXTR’A section, to examine in greater depth topics linked to immigration, integration and interculture.”

Films are submitted via an online form with the preview link being sent to festival@coeweb.org or a DVD copy to:

Though only films made in 2016 and 2017 qualify for competition, the movies that get selected shall fit in any of the following programme categories:

  • Windows on the World
    Feature films (fiction and documentaries) made by directors from Africa, Asia and Latin America (minimum running time 60 minutes)
    Prize €8000
  • African Short Film
    Short films (fiction and documentary) only by African directors (maximum running time 59 minutes)
    Prize €2000

  • EXTR’A
    Films (fiction and documentary) made by Italian directors or – foreigners based in Italy – in Africa, Asia and Latin America or dealing with themes linked to immigration and integration in Italy. Prize to be confirmed.
    Prize  €1000
  • Flash Section
    Significant previews presenting recent films by established directors, critically acclaimed films or films that have received awards at the most important international festivals
  • Special sections, thematic sections, homages and retrospectives.
