A western Kenya-based musician has released a new hit in Kiswahili titled Chini ya Maji that is expected to readily connect with fans of rap music.
Working as an unsigned artist under close supervision of producer Jamal Malique in the city of Kisumu, the talented lad known in music entertainment circles as Gabiro Mtu Necessary, is not only proving to be the lyrical president of hits in his new release but has managed to work on this second single after his previous Low Key that ruled the airwaves across the Kiswahili-speaking East African region.

Gabiro Mtu Necessary uses the Kiswahili phrase chini ya maji or under the water to highlight on the kind of relationship he would like to have. The eclectic urban groove, sweet melody and well-crafted arrangement of Chini Ya Maji allows him to portray both his sides of being a rapper and a singer in one track, hence the ease for him to shine on it all through.
“I fell deeply in love once with someone who was not ready to see our love go beyond the bedroom. We would meet secretly and do everything ‘under calm waters’ with the excuse that she is a public figure and worse enough she does not want anyone, not even close friends and family, to know about our relationship,” private life ,” says Gabiro Mtu Necessary.

What was worse, Gabiro Mtu Necessary says, his lover always responded to relationship questions with the ‘I am single’ answer that, he says, always tempted him into calling off the relationship as he was not being recognised.
“I felt like I was being used and that I meant nothing to her life after all but luckily enough I am glad I chose my path and went my separate way,” says one of the most sought after entertainers in Kisumu. “Chini Ya Maji is about being able to know what really matters in a relationship; for me it has been about knowing what I really want in a relationship. The song is meant to urge young people to avoid unhealthy relationships.”

He is steadily building a reputation as Kisumu’s best lyricist as he shares his personal struggles through his art. From working as a matatu tout to battling drug abuse, Gabiro Mtu Necessary says this gives him the ability to tell stories that sets him apart from status-quo rap musicians.

“Hip-hop inspired me to persevere as I underwent self-education. That’s why I’m so loyal to the cause and the culture. I feel like I owe it to Hip-hop to do the best I can,” Gabiro Mtu Necessary says.
To date Gabiro Mtu Necessary says he has performed and toured with several renowned artists, including Kenya’s Sauti Sol during the Nairobi-based band’s Made in Kisumu concert. He is particularly proud of his having curtain-raised for Tanzanian super star Diamond Platnumz in 2016.
